Talk, The History of Great British Parks, with Paul Rabbitts, Thursday 17th April 2025, 7:45pm, Church Centre, Featherbed Lane
This talk provides a fascinating insight into the history of one of our greatest ever institutions - our great British public parks. We have all enjoyed them at some time in our lives but what do we really know about them? What were their origins? Did they really start in the Victorian period or do they go even further back? The talk illustrates their origins, discusses the need for parks, the Victorian heyday, and what makes a great park, with examples of lodges, lakes, bandstands, fountains and floral displays, to their great decline in the sixties and seventies. The subsequent revival has led to a major shift in interest in our parks and once again we are much in love with them. This is also a highly illustrative talk accompanied by slides with examples of parks from across the UK and their designs and architecture.
Talks at The Prestwood Gardening Society
Don't forget that we have a reciprocal arrangement with our friends in the Prestwood Gardening Society whereby our members can attend each other's talks at no cost. You can view Prestwood's programme here: Events Calendar - Prestwood Gardening Society (e-voice.org.uk)
Visits and a holiday with the Hughenden Allotment and Garden Association (HAGA)
Our friends at HAGA have organised three visits for 2025 and also a short break in Chester in June. They have kindly extended an invitation to VPA members to join them on these excursions and fuller details can be found on our Outings page.
